Ashtanga Vinyasa: the Foundation of Modern Vinyasa Practice

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois & R. Sharath Jois in Mysore, India, is the historical basis of every practice we now call “power,” “flow,” and “vinyasa” yoga.  Ashtanga was the first practice to link together movement and breath, and the first practice to incorporate what modern vinyasa teachers would call “intelligent sequencing” (the literal meaning of the Sanskrit word vinyasa  is “to place in a special order.”)  Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga has its philosophical basis in the eight (astau) limb (anga) path found in the Yoga Sutra-s, and so while from a distance, the practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa appears to be simply a set sequence of postures, there is a world of deeper realms beneath the surface.
